1 Day Community Experience in Vietnam
Take part in hands-on experiences in Hoi An that go beyond sightseeing, offering you the chance to actively contribute to environmental protection and restoration. The morning takes you to a local planting site to learn about the pressing issue of soil erosion and its impact on rural communities, as well as taking part in ecological restoration efforts. In the afternoon, head to Soap for Hope, a global initiative tackling the environmental challenge of discarded hotel soaps while supporting vulnerable communities. As sustainability meets social impact, learn how a simple recycling process can reduce waste, promote hygiene and create meaningful change.
The day begins with an introduction to the challenges of soil erosion - a critical issue that forces families to relocate, and threatens traditional agricultural livelihoods and food security. As you walk through the planting site, you will gain insight into the natural and human causes of land degradation and discover the solutions being implemented to restore balance to the environment.
Next, with guidance from local experts, roll up your sleeves and plant native trees and grasses to combat erosion and regenerate the land. To recognise your contribution, you will receive a certificate of participation, recording your support for local sustainability efforts and carbon offset initiatives. More than just a keepsake, this certificate serves as a reminder of the positive impact you made on your holiday.
At Soap for Hope, they repurpose single-use hotel soap bars that would otherwise end up in landfill. Run in collaboration with Diversey, this initiative not only reduces waste but also provides essential hygiene products to those in need. After an introduction to the programme, take part in a hands-on soap recycling session using an innovative cold-press technique. Learn how discarded soaps are transformed into new, usable products through a simple yet effective process. To complete the experience, personalise your soaps by adding creative wrappers and drawings to turn them into thoughtful gifts to take home.
Note: these 2 half-day experiences can be booked separately
Your Local Impact
Severe soil erosion has forced many villagers to abandon their land over the past decade and this tree-planting project aims to directly tackle the causes of land degradation and contribute to long-term environmental stability. By planting native trees and grasses, you can actively help to reverse the damage and combat erosion, regenerate degraded areas and sequester carbon, while also improving soil health and promoting sustainable agricultural practices that benefit local communities.
Meanwhile, Soap for Hope tackles an environmental challenge while creating real benefits for the local community. By recycling discarded hotel soaps, it reduces waste in the hospitality industry, prevents used soaps from ending up in landfill and minimises the environmental impact of producing new ones. At the same time, it provides essential hygiene products to vulnerable groups, improving health and supporting local development.
Beyond its immediate impact, this experience raises awareness of waste reduction, promotes circular economy practices, and encourages responsible consumption. It's a simple yet powerful way to highlight the importance of waste reduction and how everyday items can be given a second life rather than being thrown away.
