1/2 Day Cultural Experience in Vietnam
Immerse yourself in the centuries-old craft of Vietnamese wood carving with a hands-on workshop in Kim Bong carpentry village, a hub of skilled artisans for over 500 years. Discover the fascinating history of this traditional craft and learn how floodwood from the Thu Bon River is repurposed into beautiful artworks. Under the guidance of expert woodworkers, create your own personalised masterpiece and gain insight into a heritage that still shapes the cultural identity of central Vietnam today.
Begin your journey with an introduction to the rich legacy of Kim Bong carpentry village, where generations of artisans have mastered the art of wood carving. Hear the inspiring story of how driftwood—rescued from floodwaters—is transformed into intricate carvings, preserving both heritage and the environment.
Then step into the role of a traditional craftsman as you learn the fundamentals of wood carving (recommended for ages 8+, younger children able to paint pre-carved pieces). Choose your wood, practise chisel techniques, and create your own unique design under the careful instruction of skilled artisans. Add a personal touch by painting it, making your piece a one-of-a-kind souvenir to take home.
There’s also time to enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the workshop, set amidst lush rice paddies, and browse an art studio filled with handcrafted pieces. As a memento of your experience, you’ll receive a certificate of participation, recognising your contribution to keeping this ancient craft alive.
Note: this workshop can be combined with lantern making or a cooking class for a more immersive cultural experience.
Your Local Impact
This workshop helps preserve the 500-year-old woodworking traditions of Kim Bong carpentry village while promoting sustainability through the use of reclaimed floodwood. By taking part, visitors support local artisans who pass these skills down to future generations.
The experience also raises awareness of the environmental impact of flooding and how creative recycling can help reduce waste. Through hands-on learning and cultural exchange, participants gain a deeper understanding of Vietnam’s artistic heritage and its connection to nature.
