3 Day Cultural Experience in Peru
This Peru coffee tour and Inca experience will give you an insight into the lives of families living in the Inca heartland. You will have a rare opportunity to meet coffee farmers that have been working these slopes for many generations and stay with local farmer Alejandro, who will teach you about the coffee making process and the different harvests, flavours and qualities. Comfort is not a problem as you will be staying in traditional lodges with comfortable beds and hot water and their cooking is delicious! You will also have the opportunity to walk on a spectacular Inca road past impressive valley drops, with great vistas and beautiful flora along the way.
Day 1: Your Peru coffee tour begins in the morning, where you'll travel to Santa Maria to begin a 2-3 hour walk to Huacayupana. On the way you will see impressive vistas, colourful flora, interesting crops and Inca infrastructure at its best. Lunch on the terrace of Alejandro and his family, with a view over the high jungle vegetation, then in the afternoon learn about coffee production from the maestro.
Day 2: After breakfast - yes, with a cup of fresh coffee! - an easy hike of 3-4 hours (partly by taxi if you want) will take you to Santa Teresa to visit Colcamayo hot springs and the Huadquiña coffee cooperative. In the afternoon continue about 30 minutes to the Hidroelectrica railway station, from where you take the train to Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo.
Day 3: In the morning you will be treated to a guided tour of one of the true wonders of the world, Machu Picchu, before returning to Cusco by train.
Your Local Impact
Amantani is a a great example of how a community can benefit from homestays. Firstly stays in the community are rotated so that each participating family gets a fare share of the profits brought into the island by tourism. Secondly the home stay service is managed and run by the Amantani islanders, so all income generated by your stay benefits the entire community, allowing them to preserve their traditional way of life based on farming, fishing and weaving.
