1 Day Adventure and Foodie Experience in Peru
Venture beyond the usual paths of the Sacred Valley into a tranquil side valley, where you’ll set off on an unforgettable hike alongside a herd of llamas, guided by a local herder. This unique journey takes you high into the mountains to experience a traditional Andean Pachamanca feast, prepared and enjoyed amidst the breathtaking landscape.
The day begins at 7:30 am with a pick-up from Urubamba, after which you’ll head to Chupani to meet “aunt” Juana and her llamas. Your bilingual guide, fluent in English, Spanish, and Quechua, will accompany you on a gentle 2.5- to 3-hour trek through the peaceful Pumahuanca Valley. As you hike along the river and beneath native Queuña and Unka trees, you’ll hear about the cultural significance of llamas in Andean life.
Around two hours in, you’ll reach the ancient Inkarakai ruins, a scenic stop adorned with wildflowers and perfect for photos. Continuing onwards, you’ll arrive at Juana’s rustic home near the beautiful Pacchac waterfall.
A traditional Pachamanca Lunch
Upon arrival, you’ll help prepare a Pachamanca, a traditional meal of native potatoes and seasonal ingredients cooked underground with heated stones. You’re welcome to assist with the cooking or simply enjoy the mountain surroundings. After a delicious lunch around 2 pm, you’ll begin the gentle descent, reaching the starting point by 4:30 pm for your return to Urubamba.
The hike covers roughly 9 km, reaching an elevation of up to 3,500 metres (11,500 feet). Though the pace is steady, this walk requires a moderate fitness level.
Your Local Impact
This llama-guided hike honours an ancient Andean tradition, providing income to Juana and her family while celebrating local customs. By exploring a less-visited area of the Sacred Valley, you’re supporting a community that rarely benefits from tourism, creating a meaningful connection with an unspoilt part of Peru.
